State of Local Emergency for Electoral Area C - May 5, 2026
Issued as of May 4, 2026
A state of local emergency has been declared for Electoral Area C in the Peace River Regional District as a result of the imminent threat to people due to the Old Fort landslide. The state of local emergency will remain in effect for 14 days or until cancelled by the Peace River Regional District.

Old Fort Landslide Update & ESS Renewal - May 5, 2026 1pm
ESS Renewal Wednesday May 6, 2026
Emergency Support Services (ESS) are available for evacuated residents of the Old Fort landslide. Only residents who are in the Evacuation Order area are eligible for ESS.
You must complete ESS renewals Wednesday, May 6, at the Pomeroy Sport Centre (east lobby, second floor) between 9am to 1pm and 5pm to 7pm
You MUST show up on Wednesday to renew so you can continue accessing ESS funding and services. You cannot renew before or after this date.

Old Fort Landslide Update – May 4, 2026, 5:00pm
During our drone flight on Friday May 1st, we were able to see the range of the impact the landslide has had on the road and beyond.
MOTT has reported that over the weekend movement rates continued to slow but the slide remains active. New ground cracking has been observed near the top of the slide, consistent with monitoring data. Water continues to be a concern, and weather conditions are being watched closely.
Because of these conditions Old Fort Road remains closed.
We understand the impact this is having on the evacuees and surrounding areas. We sincerely thank everyone for their continued resilience and care for one another as a community.

Old Fort Landslide Update – May 1, 2026, 8:00pm
Current Situation
Evacuation Alert #1, and Evacuation Order #1 issued by the PRRD due to the closure of Old Fort Road by MOTT, remain in place.
While the total displacement of the road today remains at 104 meters, the slide has not stopped. In their latest update, Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) noted accumulation of material up-slope which may result in future acceleration of the slide material, and layering of material elsewhere along the slide path.
Due to continued unsafe conditions, no reconstruction activity is anticipated over the weekend. PRRD and MOTT will only release updates over the weekend if there are material developments.
PRRD was able to gather some drone images Thursday, May 1 of the landslide area. Safety remains our top priority as we continue to monitor MOTT analysis and decisions on the road closure.
We ask everyone to stay away from the landslide area as we do not want to have a rescue interrupt progress.

What is happening?
On April 18, movement was noticed in the previous landslide site. In the days that followed, a significant portion of the Old Fort Road slid downhill. The slide continues to move and is considered dangerous, and we encourage people to stay away from the area, both west and east, as well as above and below. So far, the slide has moved the road over 100 metres lower on the hill.
An evacuation order was issued on April 20 and remains in place. An evacuation alert was issued for an additional area around the slide on April 23 and remains in place. The community of Old Fort is within the order area, and the road to it is inaccessible.
The PRRD activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is responding to this event, which is impacting Crown land and a road maintained by the province. We are working with the province and other local governments on the response to this event, focusing on safety and coordinating resources, such as Emergency Support Services (ESS).
The Old Fort Road is closed, and security is in place. Please respect those working at the checkpoint, who are there to protect life safety.

Old Fort Landslide Evacuation Order and Alert Update - April 28, 2026, 3pm
ESS Renewal

ESS is made easier with the BC Services Card app on your smartphone. If you need to validate your BC Services Card app, please visit Service BC in Fort St. John during regular business hours.
If you have not already completed the validation process on the BC Service card app and want to access e-transfer, please visit the Service BC building (the courthouse building), hours 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. before visiting the reception centre.

ESS renewals will happen on April 29. Those wishing to continue receiving ESS must renew that day. Further instructions to come tomorrow.

An Evacuation Order and Alert remain in effect for the Old Fort area due to an active landslide resulting in a Ministry of Transportation and Transit road closure causing community isolation.Current Situation and Safety Warning:
There is no safe road access to or from the community.The landslide remains active and unstable. Conditions can change abruptly. Ground movement in the active part of the landslide was noted to be 9 to 10mm/minute on Friday.
Vehicles near the landslide are at increased risk due to ongoing ground movement and possible expansion of the affected area. Do not park in this area. Vehicles may be parked to the west (Fort St John side) of the Traffic Control Point.
No new updates will be published this weekend unless there are any notable changes to the situation. The PRRD Emergency Operations Centre remains activated.

Old Fort Landslide Evacuation Order and Alert Update - April 23, 2026, 6:00pm6:00 PM – April 23, 2026
An Evacuation Order remains in effect for the Old Fort area due to an active landslide and ongoing risk to safety resulting from the closure of Old Fort Road by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.
An Evacuation Alert is also in effect for areas west and north of the existing Evacuation Order.
There is no safe road access to or from the community.
Vehicles near the landslide may be at risk from sudden ground movement. Do not park in this area. -
Old Fort Landslide Evacuation Alert and Order Status Update - April 23, 2026, 2:00pm
2:00 PM – April 23, 2026
An Evacuation Alert #1 was issued on April 23, 10.00am due to the potential danger to life safety caused by active landslide and ongoing risk to safety resulting from the closure of Old Fort Road by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.
This is in addition to the Evacuation Order #1 which is still in effect.
There is no safe road access to or from the community.
Updated Safety Warning- The landslide area and nearby ground are extremely dangerous.
- Vehicles parked on either side of the landslide may be at risk as the ground is still moving and the landslide area may expand.
- Do not drive or park past the traffic control checkpoint.
- People should not approach, stop, or park near the landslide area under any circumstances.
- Emergency services cannot reach the area.
- The landslide area and nearby ground are extremely dangerous.
