The Peace River Regional District’s (PRRD) 2026 FireSmart™ campaign is in full swing, with its first Block Party successfully held on May 3. More opportunities for rural residents to learn simple, practical steps to reduce wildfire risk and protect their homes are planned throughout 2026.
Now in its sixth year, the program continues to grow in reach and impact. Since launching in 2021, PRRD FireSmart has completed 529 home assessments, hosted 38 community events, delivered 135 senior and mobility support services and completed 67 critical infrastructure and community asset mitigation projects across the region.
Peace River Regional District offices in Dawson Creek (1981 Alaska Avenue) and Fort St. John (9505 100 Street) are closed on Monday, May 18, 2026, for Victoria Day.
The Peace River Regional District Board of Directors has delayed the second reading of the proposed new Regional Zoning Bylaw. Before moving forward, the Board has asked staff for more detailed information regarding the proposed changes.
To better understand the impact of the new bylaw, the Board requested reports on:
which parcels are changing zones
differences between old zones and proposed new zones
Upon further review, the prohibition applies only to a small portion of the Peace River Regional District located within Kakwa Provincial Park at its southern boundary. It does not apply to the rest of the PRRD. We apologize for the inconvenience and confusion.
As of May 6, 2026, there are no Category 2 or Category 3 open burning prohibitions in effect within the Peace River Regional District outside of Kakwa Provincial Park.
Over the past two weeks, several out-of-control burn pile incidents have occurred within the PRRD, threatening properties and requiring responses from municipal and rural fire departments, as well as BCWS. We join the Prince George Fire Centre in urging residents to use caution with open burning during this high-risk period between snowmelt and green-up.
The operation will take place any time after 18:00hrs (6pm) MST and is expected to continue throughout the month of May 2026, depending on weather and logistics, or until the burn area is completed. This prescribed burn is for cross-training and to mitigate roadside fuels hazards such as grasses and ladder fuels.
During this time, smoke may be visible from Saulteau First Nations, Moberly Lake and to travellers along Highway 29. Residents may also observe emergency vehicles, fire personnel and operational activity in the area.
Please be assured that this operation is planned, controlled and all reasonable measures will be taken to ensure it is carried out safely.
The Peace River Regional District (PRRD), in collaboration with municipal partners, is inviting residents to help shape the region’s new Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Analysis (HRVA). Starting May 2, the PRRD is hosting six in-person community events to gather vital resident perspectives on local hazards. An online survey is open now to capture feedback, closing May 22, 2026.
PRRD Chair Brad Sperling sat down with Moose Media to chat about regional priorities heading into spring 2026 in the latest installment of our Chair's Update series.
