PRRD Offers Free Hands-On Wildfire Defense for Rural Seniors and Residents with Mobility Challenges

PEACE RIVER REGIONAL DISTRICT, BC — As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense across British Columbia, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is reminding eligible residents to take advantage of free, hands-on help to protect their homes.

Professional crews from Mammoth Forestry will complete physical wildfire mitigation landscape work around eligible properties at zero cost to the homeowner. This dedicated support service is available for seniors and persons with mobility challenges, through the PRRD’s FireSmart™ program.

Services include:

• Clearing gutters and removing yard brush
• Pruning trees and removing fuel sources near homes
• Chipping wood and completing ladder work

Launched in 2024, the support service has already helped more than 200 rural residents who are physically unable to complete FireSmart work themselves. Paired with over 600 Home Ignition Zone Assessments completed since 2021, the PRRD is working to make wildfire resilience accessible to everyone.

Eligibility

The support service is open to PRRD residents who:

• Are 65 years of age or older,
• Have limited mobility, or
• Belong to a vulnerable population needing physical help with FireSmart tasks
  
  

Help Us Spread the Word

Small changes around a home can drastically reduce wildfire damage risks. The Regional District encourages family members, caregivers, neighbours and local community groups to share this support service through the FireSmart program with anyone who might benefit.
