Chair’s August Update Highlights Old Fort Landslide Response, 2026 Elections, Regional Parks Planning and More

PRRD Chair Brad Sperling sat down with Moose Media to chat about regional priorities heading into fall 2026 in the latest installment of our Chair's Update series. Subscribe to the PRRD's YouTube channel PeaceRiverRegionalD to see more from the Regional District.

Areas discussed:

2026 Local Government Elections

Local government elections will take place on October 17, 2026, with nomination periods opening in September. Chair Sperling encouraged residents interested in serving their communities to attend candidate information sessions and learn more about what is involved in local government. He emphasized the importance of local government as the level closest to residents and noted that Regional District operations and projects will continue as usual throughout the election period until a new Board is sworn in.

Old Fort Landslide Response

Chair Sperling discussed the PRRD's response to the Old Fort landslide and reaffirmed that resident health and safety remains the Regional District's top priority during emergencies. Following direction from the Province, studies were completed to assess conditions and support decisions around evacuation orders and re-entry. The PRRD continues to seek guidance from the Province regarding next steps, noting that the landslide area is located on Crown land and falls under provincial jurisdiction.

Emergency Preparedness and Wildfire Season

While the region has experienced a relatively quiet wildfire season thanks to significant winter snowfall and consistent moisture, Chair Sperling stressed the importance of remaining prepared. The PRRD continues to support residents through its FireSmart program, which offers assessments and assistance to help reduce wildfire risks. Emergency planning remains an ongoing priority, with staff continually reviewing and updating response plans for wildfires, floods, landslides and other emergencies.

Hazard Risk Studies and Community Referendums

The PRRD continues to undertake hazard and risk studies to better understand emergency preparedness needs across the region. Chair Sperling noted the importance of public participation in these studies, as residents often have unique perspectives on local risks and priorities. He also highlighted several referendums expected this fall, including proposals related to water services in Electoral Areas C, D and E, as well as future investments in community facilities. A successful referendum would provide the Regional District with the authority to further investigate and plan potential services or projects, rather than immediately proceeding with construction.

Peace Villa and Long-Term Care Advocacy

The cancellation of the Peace Villa long-term care project remains a significant concern for the PRRD. Chair Sperling reiterated the Board's commitment to advocating for expanded seniors' care options in the region, noting that current and future demand exceeds the previously approved 84-bed project. The PRRD is exploring alternative models, including discussions with Providence Health Care, to identify opportunities that could accelerate the delivery of long-term care spaces while minimizing impacts on local taxpayers. The Board continues to pursue solutions that support seniors throughout both the North and South Peace regions.

Regional Parks Planning

The Board recently paused further consideration of long-term park development plans for regional parks, including Blackfoot Regional Park, while additional information becomes available. Chair Sperling noted that future decisions will depend on factors such as park usage, service demand, potential costs and external considerations, including ongoing discussions related to Site C reservoir impacts near Blackfoot Regional Park. Existing studies and planning work will remain available for future Boards to consider.

Get Involved

Chair Sperling closed the discussion by encouraging residents to become engaged in local government, either by running for office, participating in public consultations or learning more about upcoming referendums and community initiatives. He emphasized that informed and engaged residents play a critical role in shaping the future of the Peace River Regional District.
