Retraction: Peace River Regional District Currently Not Impacted by Category 2 and Category 3 Open Fire Prohibition

We are retracting our May 5 post regarding an open fire prohibition issued by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

Upon further review, the prohibition applies only to a small portion of the Peace River Regional District located within Kakwa Provincial Park at its southern boundary. It does not apply to the rest of the PRRD. We apologize for the inconvenience and confusion.

As of May 6, 2026, there are no Category 2 or Category 3 open burning prohibitions in effect within the Peace River Regional District outside of Kakwa Provincial Park.

Over the past two weeks, several out-of-control burn pile incidents have occurred within the PRRD, threatening properties and requiring responses from municipal and rural fire departments, as well as BCWS. We join the Prince George Fire Centre in urging residents to use caution with open burning during this high-risk period between snowmelt and green-up.
