Ministry of Transportation and Transit / Province of BC information:

What is happening?

On April 18, movement was noticed in the previous landslide site. In the days that followed, a significant portion of the Old Fort Road slid downhill. The slide continues to move and is considered dangerous, and we encourage people to stay away from the area, both west and east, as well as above and below. So far, the slide has moved the road over 100 metres lower on the hill.

An evacuation order was issued on April 20 and remains in place. An evacuation alert was issued for an additional area around the slide on April 23 and remains in place. The community of Old Fort is within the order area, and the road to it is inaccessible.

The PRRD activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is responding to this event, which is impacting Crown land and a road maintained by the province. We are working with the province and other local governments on the response to this event, focusing on safety and coordinating resources, such as Emergency Support Services (ESS).

The Old Fort Road is closed, and security is in place. Please respect those working at the checkpoint, who are there to protect life safety.

What happens next?

MOTT must wait for the slide to stabilize before any analysis, and a plan can be made. Given the current movement on the landslide, this is not expected to change over the next week.

The PRRD does not have an estimate on when the road will reopen. For the current road status, please visit the DriveBC advisory page.

The BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) is responsible for the roadway. Follow their updates on the Drive BC Old Fort page.

ESS

Emergency Support Services (ESS) are available for evacuated residents of the Old Fort landslide. Only residents who are in the Evacuation Order area are eligible for ESS. Renewals were completed on Wednesday, April 30, 2026. All hotels were able to accommodate those that renewed. For questions, please call Provincial Emergency Support Services Information Line: 1-800-387-4258

If you have not already completed the validation process on the BC Service card app and want to access e-transfer, please visit the Service BC building (the courthouse building), hours 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ,before visiting the reception centre.

Canada Post

Mail for the community is being held at the post office in Fort St John (10139 101 Ave). For more information, please call the post office directly at (250) 785-4625.

No Ambulance Services

BC Ambulance Service will not respond to incidents in areas under an evacuation order. Residents must be aware that if they require medical attention, it will take several hours and require a helicopter rescue at their own risk and cost.

While we know incidents are rare, when they happen, they will also require emergency response staffing to redirect resources from the community for a rescue, which we want to avoid. We strongly encourage all people to stay out of the Evacuation Order area at all times.

Waste Management – Bear Warning

Waste will attract bears to the area. The PRRD is not legally able to offer waste collection in evacuation order areas.

This will attract bears and other animals who could pose a threat to your safety.

Landslides Kill in BC

There are reports of individuals, including children, crossing over the active landslide area. This is extremely dangerous to life safety, as landslides may contain crevices, voids, and loose or muddy debris.

We remind everyone that landslides have killed people in British Columbia in recent years. They are unpredictable, constantly changing and are naturally unstable.

Please stay out of the evacuation order area, which is in place for your safety and the safety of those you care about. There are many other areas to explore and enjoy which are safer.

Old Fort Lookoff Closed

The province has closed the Old Fort Lookoff because of the landslide. No access to the area is permitted.
