Charlie Lake Fire Department Introduces PFAS-Free Turnout Gear to Enhance Firefighter Safety
The Charlie Lake Fire Department has officially placed its new PFAS-free turnout gear into service following a department training session July 9. The custom-fitted protective gear is the culmination of months of planning, funding, procurement and fitting. The initiative reflects the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) Board's ongoing commitment to supporting local firefighters through investments in modern equipment that enhances health, safety and long-term well-being.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are a class of synthetic chemicals that can persist in the environment and the human body for long periods of time. As awareness of the potential health risks associated with PFAS continues to grow, fire departments across North America are transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives that help reduce firefighter exposure.
“Our firefighters put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities, and it is our responsibility as a Board to ensure they have the safest and most advanced equipment available,” said PRRD Board Chair and Electoral Area C Director Brad Sperling. “This investment in PFAS-free turnout gear reflects our commitment to supporting the long-term health, safety and wellness of the dedicated men and women who serve with the Charlie Lake Fire Department. We are proud to lead initiatives that protect our first responders and strengthen emergency services for residents across the region.”
The investment reflects the PRRD's ongoing commitment to firefighter health and safety. By providing modern protective equipment, the Board is helping ensure Charlie Lake firefighters have the resources they need to perform their duties safely and effectively.
