Written statement from Chair Sperling on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) joins communities across Canada in honouring Survivors of residential schools, remembering those who never returned home and reflecting on the work that remains to advance reconciliation.

The PRRD operates on the traditional territories of several First Nations, including the Dane-zaa Peoples, signatories of Treaty 8 and the Métis Nation BC Region 7. We honour their enduring heritage and vital contributions to our communities and region.

While September 30 is an important day of reflection, reconciliation requires year-round commitment, ongoing learning and meaningful action. Our focus remains on continued engagement with First Nations, educating our staff on Indigenous history and culture and actively supporting reconciliation efforts throughout the year.

We remain committed to strengthening relationships with First Nations in the region through open dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration. We support Indigenous self-determination and the advancement of shared economic prosperity while honouring the profound relationship First Nations have with the land and water.

On this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, I encourage residents to take time to listen, learn and reflect on the role we each play in advancing reconciliation.

PRRD offices will be closed on September 30, 2026, in observance of this day.
