PRRD launches second round of engagement on Solid Waste Collection Network

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) has launched Phase 2 engagement for its Solid Waste Collection Network as part of its comprehensive review of its solid waste facility network. The review considered the number and location of facilities, the services provided at each facility, how often the facilities are used, the distances travelled to access the facilities and the cost of operating and maintaining the system over time. The review also included feedback received during Phase 1 engagement, which took place in March 2026.

Phase 2 engagement will include a survey and pop-up events to gather feedback on proposed changes to the transfer station network and how proposed changes may affect residents and communities before decisions are made. The survey is open from August 24, 2026, to September 11, 2026, at 4:30pm (PT). 

Hard copies of the survey are available at all regional landfills and attended transfer stations. Copies are also available at both PRRD offices in Dawson Creek (1981 Alaska Avenue) and Fort St. John (9505 100 Street). In-person pop-up events will take place at transfer stations across the region in August. These events will provide an opportunity for residents to learn more about the Solid Waste Collection Network Assessment, ask questions, and share feedback on how they use or would prefer to use the transfer station system. “We encourage residents to take the survey, attend a pop-up event, and share their perspectives,” said Board Chair Brad Sperling. “Understanding how people use the current system and how they may be affected by potential changes will provide valuable information for the future of our Solid Waste Collection Network.”

Background

The PRRD’s regional solid waste network currently includes three landfills, 16 attended transfer stations, 11 unattended transfer stations, three privately run recycling depots and three unattended recycling drop-off sites. In the PRRD’s 2021 Regional Solid Waste Management Plan, improving access and efficiency in the Solid Waste Facility Network was identified as a priority. The 2021 Regional Solid Waste Management Plan concluded that the current network provides broad access across a large rural region with some overlapping services, there are different levels of use at sites, recycling and diversion services are not available equally across the region and long-term operating and replacement costs need to be considered. Prior to completing all recommended upgrades from the 2021 Regional Solid Waste Management Plan, the PRRD determined a comprehensive review was required to support future investments that are fair, coordinated, and cost-effective.
