PRRD Invites Golata Creek Residents to Review Options for New Community Space

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) invites Golata Creek residents to a community meeting to review and give feedback on six distinct options for a new community space located at 6161 Golata Creek Road. This is the final planned community meeting for this project. If the community agrees on a preferred option and the Board approves moving forward, a public vote (referendum) could take place in October 2026.

Based on mixed feedback from residents during public engagement in spring 2025, the PRRD held a targeted community visioning session later that year. At this session, residents expressed an interest in either an indoor or outdoor community space but needed additional information on costs. The PRRD then engaged a landscape architect to develop options for the site, ranging from a simple outdoor recreation area to a small, serviced community hall. The PRRD will present these options and associated costs and gather feedback from residents at a community meeting and through a survey.

The meeting and survey will gather input on:

  • Six distinct options
  • Estimated project costs and annual taxation impacts
  • Community preferences and feedback

Community input from the public engagement will inform a recommendation to the Regional Board on whether to move forward with a referendum. If approved, the community will have the final say on whether they support a new taxation area to fund the project.

Survey

Residents are encouraged to review the project information and complete the online survey open from March 30 to April 15 (4:30pm) at haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca/gcsp.

Paper copies of the survey will be available at the community meeting and at the PRRD offices in Dawson Creek (1981 Alaska Avenue) and Fort St. John (9505 100 Street). To request a printed copy to be mailed to you, please contact the Communications Department at communications@prrd.bc.ca.

Background

The Golata Creek Community Hall, built in 1958, was closed in July 2022 due to safety concerns related to its structural integrity. Engineering assessments found that repairs would be too expensive. The PRRD Board has approved a budget of $500,000 for potentially developing a new building or recreational space, dependent on community support through a referendum.
