National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Statement from Chair Sperling
On December 6, we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day marks the anniversary of the 1989 tragedy in Montreal where 14 women were killed at a major university.
As we lower our flags to half-mast in memoriam, we remember not only these lives cut short, but all women and girls who have experienced gender-based violence.
Gender-based violence affects families, workplaces and communities. Each of us has a role to play in creating a culture where violence is not tolerated, where those who experience gender-based violence are supported and where everyone can live freely and safely.
This day calls us to move beyond remembrance to meaningful action in our communities.
