Development Applications for Lands Within the Old Fort Study Area

Until further notice, and at the resolution of the Regional Board, the Peace River Regional District will consider, but is likely to reject or defer any application for Development Variance Permits, Temporary Use Permits, Official Community Plan (OCP) Bylaw Amendments and Zoning Bylaw Amendments for lands within the Geohazard Study Area (outlined in red in the below map).

Study Area

The study area is located approximately 5 kilometers south of Fort St. John near the community of Old Fort, BC.

Rationale and Duration

These measures will remain in place until the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) has completed all geotechnical studies of Old Fort Road, and made a final determination on the long-term plan for the road as it relates to sustainable access. The PRRD is entering into this deferral as it requires a complete picture from MoTI to better understand what risks, if any, are associated with additional land development in the geohazard study area.

While the PRRD has not received a definitive timeline from MoTT as to when it might solidify a direction for sustainable access, the Ministry is planning to do further assessment this fall to further refine the access options highlighted in their December 3, 2021 report, Old Fort Options Analysis Study. One of the options that are being investigated by MoTT includes maintaining the existing road with stabilization works to reduce the future of landslide movements affecting road traffic.

Next Steps and Updates

The Regional District does not have the authority to make decisions on Old Fort Road. The Ministry, under the provincial government, is responsible for all aspects of the road, including maintenance and construction development.

The PRRD will provide updates as they become available via its website at prrd.bc.ca and social media channels @OfficialPRRD.
