Freedom of Information

British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) aims to make public organizations more transparent and to protect personal privacy. It does this by:

  • Giving you as a member of the public the right to access records
  • Allowing you to see and request corrections to your personal information
  • Setting clear limits on when access to information can be denied
  • Preventing public organizations from collecting, using or sharing personal information without permission
  • Providing a way to appeal decisions made under the Act

Request Access to Records

Requesting access to records is a formal way for you to ask for government records. You can request documents about yourself or other government information. This gives you the right to access government-held records with some restrictions to safeguard privacy.

How to Apply

To apply to request access to records, please email us your completed application. Please make sure to describe the records you are requesting as clearly as possible. Being specific will help us process your request more easily. If you need more space, feel free to attach an extra sheet. If you know any reference or file numbers, please include them.

Before You Start

Before submitting a formal Request for Access to Records, you should first check to see if you are looking for a routine record. Routine records do not contain personal or confidential information. They are legally releasable under provincial legislation and do not require you to make a formal request.

Please contact us directly if you are looking for a routine record. The relevant department can provide the information you are looking for without the need for a formal application. This can save time and effort for everyone involved. If your question cannot be addressed informally, you are welcome to proceed with the formal request process.

Correcting Your Personal Information

If there is an issue with your details, you can apply to fix any incorrect or outdated personal information. FIPPA helps to ensure your personal information is accurate and current.

How to Apply

To apply to correct your personal information, please email us your completed application. Please make sure that you describe the personal details that you want to correct. If you have any supporting documents, please attach them. If you need more space, feel free to attach an extra sheet. If you know any reference or file numbers, please include them.
