The Peace River Regional District relies on a range of committees to address the needs and priorities of the region. Together, they work to support effective governance, sustainable development and the well-being of residents across our communities.

Standing Committees

The PRRD's standing committees address specific priorities and functions. These committees play a vital role in providing oversight, advice, and recommendations to ensure the effective management of key areas such as rural budgets, solid waste, regional parks, invasive plants and health care scholarships.

Appointees for the Broadband Internet and Mobility Standing Committee include all Regional Board members.

The Electoral Area Directors’ Committee is a dedicated body composed of elected representatives from Electoral Areas ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’, and ‘E’. This committee addresses matters of a rural nature, ensuring that the unique needs and perspectives of communities are effectively represented and prioritized.

The Health Care Scholarship Criteria Select Committee plays a pivotal role in supporting the development and retention of health care professionals in the Peace River Region. Among its key responsibilities, the committee facilitates the distribution of health care scholarships to medical students, ensuring financial assistance is provided to those pursuing careers in health care. The committee implements Regional Board initiatives aimed at recruiting and retaining skilled health care professionals, addressing critical workforce needs in the region.

The committee adjudicates RN/RPN health care scholarship applications, as well as other scholarships as necessary. Furthermore, it provides health care-related recommendations to the Board, including proposals to expand or reduce scholarship programs based on evolving needs and priorities. They manage the scholarship budget with Regional Board approval. This enables the committee to disperse funds effectively to participants in various health care education programs. Through these efforts, the committee contributes significantly to strengthening the health care system and supporting the next generation of medical professionals.

The Invasive Plant Committee (IPC) is dedicated to safeguarding the region’s economy, environment, and social values from the detrimental impacts of invasive plants. The committee’s primary goal is to prevent the spread of invasive species and to manage existing infestations through the implementation of integrated pest management strategies. By addressing the threats posed by invasive plants, the IPC works to preserve native ecosystems, protect agricultural productivity, and maintain the natural beauty and recreational value of the area.

The Rural Budgets Administration Committee is entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing and administering the rural budgets outlined in Schedule "A" of Bylaw 1853. Delegated authority by the Regional Board, the committee ensures that these budgets are managed in alignment with the programs, plans, policies and guidelines. By carefully monitoring expenditures and resource allocation, the committee plays a crucial role in supporting the financial sustainability and effective implementation of rural initiatives.

Recognizing that Solid Waste Management is a critical regional function and the largest single budget item, the Solid Waste Committee (SWC) serves as an advisory body to the Regional District, providing guidance and oversight on matters related to waste management. The committee’s primary goals are to identify and address concerns and issues that may arise within the solid waste management system, ensuring its efficiency, sustainability and alignment with regional priorities. By offering informed recommendations and fostering collaboration, the SWC plays a vital role in shaping policies and practices that promote effective waste reduction, recycling and disposal.

Select Committees

Select committees within the PRRD are specialized groups established to address specific, often time-sensitive, issues or projects that require focused attention and expertise. These committees conduct in-depth reviews, providing strategic recommendations and guiding decision-making on matters of regional importance. Unlike standing committees, select committees are often formed for a defined purpose and duration, allowing for targeted efforts to achieve specific goals.

The Provincial Environmental Management Act mandates regional districts to develop Solid Waste Management Plans that outline long-term strategies for managing municipal and rural solid wastes and recyclables. The joint Public and Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) plays a key role in reviewing and updating the Solid Waste Management Plan by providing valuable input and feedback on the Plan review. Additionally, PTAC offers recommendations to the Regional District on proposed programs and policies that will shape the updated Regional Solid Waste Management Plan.

Legislated and Bylaw Commissions and Committees

Established under specific legislation or the PRRD's bylaws, legislated and bylaw commissions and committees address critical functions and responsibilities mandated by provincial or local governance frameworks. These bodies are tasked with ensuring compliance with legal requirements, providing oversight and delivering specialized services that align with regional priorities.

The Chetwynd Civic Properties Commission is responsible for establishing policies, procedures and management goals and objectives to guide the operation of Chetwynd’s civic properties facilities. Outlined in Bylaw 1058, this includes the Chetwynd Recreation Centre, Chetwynd Leisure Centre and ancillary tennis courts and ballfields. The commission plays a key role in ensuring these facilities are managed efficiently, sustainably and in alignment with community needs and priorities.
Regular Commission Meetings take place roughly every month and are open to the public.

The Emergency Executive Committee is a critical body tasked with ensuring the PRRD is prepared for, capable of responding to and able to recover from emergencies and disasters. The committee is responsible for establishing and maintaining an effective emergency management organization that develops, implements and maintains comprehensive emergency plans and preparedness measures as per Bylaw 1599.

The North Peace Leisure Pool Commission is responsible for the administration and oversight of the North Peace Leisure Pool, a key recreational facility located within the City of Fort St. John. As per Bylaw 1855, the commission ensures the efficient operation, maintenance and management of the pool, providing a safe and welcoming environment for community members to enjoy aquatic activities and programs. 

Regular Commission Meetings take place around every two months and are open to the public. We hold all meetings in the NPLP Meeting Room unless otherwise noted.

The Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel is a crucial body responsible for ensuring the accuracy and fairness of the new parcel tax. The panel’s primary role is to review and consider concerns regarding the parcel tax roll, ensuring that it is authenticated in accordance with established guidelines and regulations. Fire Management Committees

A Fire Management Committee (FMC) is dedicated to coordinating firefighting efforts and ensuring the safety and resilience of rural communities. These committees focus on fire prevention, preparedness and response. They work closely with local fire departments, emergency services and community stakeholders.
