- Understand the funder’s grant reporting requirements before applying.
- Check when funding is announced in case it impacts your project.
- Prioritize grant writing tasks so you don’t run out of time, e.g., requesting a grant portal login.
- Reach out to the funder with any questions.
- Draft your grant proposal in MS Word or a similar application.
- Be clear and succinct in your responses; use plain language.
- Align your responses with the evaluation criteria.
- Tell a compelling story about why you need funding.
- Make your story about those who benefit and include examples.
- Validate your responses with research and include references, if applicable.
- Avoid saying “see above” if you feel like you’ve already answered a question previously. Sometimes it’s necessary to be repetitive.
- Consider building partnerships that strengthen your application and project.
- Include a detailed budget with quotes. Don’t forget a contingency for cost increases, if permitted.
- Show how you will acknowledge the funder in your project.
- Take a break from writing your proposal, so you can return with a fresh perspective.
- Proofread your proposal and ensure you’ve included all mandatory documents.
- Upload or submit your proposal well before the deadline.
- Save your submitted grant proposal, so you can reuse content later.
- Follow up with the funder if you haven’t heard back or want feedback on your unsuccessful proposal.
Grant Writer Services Program
The Grant Writer Services program helps community groups and not-for-profit organizations within the Peace River Regional District apply for grants. This includes finding the right grants for your project, completing grant applications and assisting with additional documentation and technical requirements, such as letters of support or greenhouse gas emission calculations. If your project provides benefits to one or more communities and you need assistance writing a grant application, we can help.

Before You Start
The Grant Writer Services program is only available to community groups located within the PRRD. This can include, but is not limited to, not-for-profit registered societies or charities, church groups, community hall operators, parent advisory councils and emergency services associations.
