Written Statement From Chair Hiebert on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) recommits to fostering meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in our region. This day remains a continual reminder of our shared history and the ongoing path towards healing, respect and understanding.

The PRRD operates on the traditional territories of several First Nations, including the Dane-zaa Peoples, signatories of Treaty 8 and the Métis Nation BC Region 7. We honour their enduring heritage and vital contributions to our communities and region.

Reconciliation is not confined to a single day. It is a sustained journey of learning and meaningful action. Our focus remains on continued engagement with First Nations, educating our staff on Indigenous history and culture and actively supporting reconciliation efforts throughout the year.

We are committed to building relationships with First Nations in the region based on trust, mutual respect and collaboration. We support Indigenous self-determination and the advancement of shared economic prosperity while honouring the profound relationship First Nations have with the land and water.

As we observe this important day, I encourage all residents to consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in our everyday lives. Together, by working collaboratively, we can create a future that is inclusive, equitable and respectful for everyone in the Peace River Regional District.

PRRD offices will be closed on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, in observance of this day.
