Regional District Highlights for August 2025

PRRD Looking for Community Input on Future of Jackfish Community Hall

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is seeking community input on the future of the Jackfish Community Hall, located outside of Chetwynd.

A 2021 facility assessment and damage from a 2024 heating failure revealed the hall needs significant repairs and upgrades for fire safety and accessibility. The hall currently lacks a consistent way to fund these costs, relying on temporary grants and fundraising. The facility has been closed since 2021 due to these factors.

The PRRD is gathering feedback through an online survey and a community meeting on September 9 at the Chetwynd & District Recreation Centre. They want to know if residents still want to use the hall, support a dedicated funding plan through potential taxation, and are willing to continue managing its daily operations. This feedback will help the PRRD Regional Board determine the hall's future.

PRRD Launches Free Major Appliance Recycling Program

The PRRD is now accepting major/large appliances for free recycling at all of its landfills and Tier 1 transfer stations. This service is now free thanks to a partnership with the Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR), an organization that manages appliance recycling across British Columbia. Residents can drop off both refrigerated and non-refrigerated appliances at no cost.

For a full list of accepted items, visit the MARR website at largeappliancerecycling.ca.

Project Update: Osborn Hall Replacement

The PRRD has approved plans to develop design concepts and costs to develop the grounds at 17526 Siphon Creek Road into an outdoor recreation space. The decision, made on August 14, 2025, follows recommendations from a board report that summarized community feedback gathered in July 2025 through a survey and public meeting.

The PRRD will now work on procuring two design concepts that incorporate the community's top requests for amenities. These concepts will be presented to the public in 2026. The existing building on the site, Osborn Hall, has been closed since 2019 and will be demolished to make way for a revitalized space.

Project Update: Spencer Tuck Design Study

On August 14, 2025, the PRRD Board approved the Spencer Tuck Regional Park Design Study. This document will guide all future development at the park and includes recommendations for improved accessibility, parking, boat launch options and day use amenities.

The board's decision was based on community feedback gathered through extensive public engagement in October and November 2024. PRRD staff have been authorized to apply to the provincial government for a road closure as part of the development in the park.

Project Update: Golata Creek Community Space

On May 22, 2025, the PRRD Board authorized staff to begin developing new plans for the Golata Creek Community Hall site. The decision was based on a board report that summarized community feedback gathered in April and May 2025.

The PRRD will now procure two concept designs: one for a small community hall and another for an outdoor recreation space. The existing hall, which has been closed since 2022, will be demolished this year to make way for the new space. The PRRD plans to present the new concepts to the community by February 2026.
