Taxes

Taxes in rural areas are an important part of funding local services and infrastructure. Understanding how taxes work is essential for both new and long-time residents to manage your responsibilities as a property owner. Learn about your rural taxes, parcel taxes, where and how to pay your taxes, how tax amounts are determined and how to get more information about your property assessment.

Tax Payments

Property owners must pay these taxes to the British Columbia provincial government, as payments cannot be made at the Peace River Regional District offices.

Here are a few easy ways to pay your rural property taxes:

  • Online: Sign in or sign up at eTaxBC
  • Through your bank: Use online banking, EFT or wire transfer (details are on the back of your tax notice)
  • By mail: Send a cheque (check your tax notice for mailing information)
  • In person: Stop by a Service BC location

Address Changes

Mailing address information for the Regional District is automatically updated through the Land Title and Survey Authority and BC Assessment. The PRRD cannot update addresses on rural utility bills nor provide a change of address notification to the provincial government.

To update your mailing or civic address:

Property Taxes

You can learn about property taxes in rural areas of BC and discover how they work, your property tax amount and how to check if they were paid. Property taxes are based on your property’s value, which is determined by BC Assessment each year. They can give you details about how your property was assessed.

Parcel Taxes

Depending on where you live, you may need to pay parcel taxes. These are fixed fees on each parcel or lot within a specific service area. There are three types of parcel taxes: flat, taxable area and taxable frontage. We currently only have flat taxes, the other two are variable amounts each year based on frontage area or taxable area. The tax applies to all properties that can potentially use the service. Your property tax bill may include parcel taxes, which are collected by the Province of BC on our behalf. The funds are used for maintenance and repairs to the related service including:

  • Charlie Lake Sewer
  • Chilton Subdivision Sewage Collection
  • Friesen Subdivision and Area Sewage Collection
  • Fort St John Airport Subdivision Potable Water
  • Fort St John Airport Subdivision Sanitary Sewer
  • Harper Imperial Subdivision Sewer
  • Kelly Lake Sewage
  • Rolla Sewer
  • Rolla Creek Watercourse Dyking
