Recycling Process

Explore what happens next after you drop off your waste and recycling. If you do not see your material here and have questions, you can email Environmental Services to learn more.

Cardboard goes to mills in the Pacific Northwest, mainly in Washington State. This material is pulped and reprocessed into new cardboard.

Commingled curbside material goes to facilities in Edmonton and Vancouver to be sorted. The material is then shipped to processors for recycling.

Containers go to a processor in Greater Vancouver, Merlin Plastics. This processor handles materials from the RecycleBC EPR program. High-value, soft and hard plastics are washed and then ground or pelletized before being sold as material to make new products. Merlin processes Tetra-Paks and wax cartons and ships them to recyclers in North America and overseas to be pulped.

Glass goes to a processing facility in Quesnel where it is ground up and turned into sandblasting material. The sandblasting material is used by businesses in the Peace Region as well as across BC and Alberta.

Metals go to ABC Recycling in Fort St John. From there, they are sent to processors in North America to be made into new metal products, including packaging and sheet metal.

Baled mixed paper goes to sorting facilities in Edmonton or Vancouver. Once sorted, it is sent to processors including in Greater Vancouver for new egg cartons and a processor in Alberta that makes insulation.

Styrofoam is densified locally with a thermal hot melt densifier. The thermal densifier heats up and removes the air from the styrofoam. This results in a 90:1 compression – 90 truckloads of foam are reduced to 1 truckload! The densified blocks are then shipped to a processor in Greater Vancouver where they are pelletized and used to make picture frames and crown moulding.

Stewardship Programs

In British Columbia, a steward refers to a company or organization that recycles its packaging and paper products (PPP) from households. This responsibility applies to brand owners, first importers or franchisors who sell these items within the province. The BC government has shifted the responsibility of managing PPP disposal from local governments to the industry. Under this extended producer responsibility model, they require companies to collect and recycle their products after consumer use.
