Preparing for an Emergency

Emergency planning is critical to keeping our communities safe. In the Peace River Regional District, municipalities create their own emergency plans, while we focus on rural areas like Areas B, C, D and E. By preparing for emergencies, you can reduce the impact of unexpected events, protect lives, respond effectively and recover more quickly. Encouraging everyone to create emergency plans gives people the knowledge and tools that they need to tackle emergency situations.

Here are some simple ways to help your community stay prepared for emergencies:

  • Get to know your community, including its people, size and specific needs
  • Figure out what dangers exist and how they could affect your community
  • Encourage everyone to take steps to prepare on their own
  • Work with neighbors to create a plan for how the community will respond in an emergency
  • Identify resources available in the community that can help during emergencies
  • Hold training sessions and practice drills to ensure everyone knows what to do
  • Connect with other communities and organizations to share resources and support

Emergency Support Services

If you are under evacuation, you might need Emergency Support Services (ESS) for food, shelter or clothing. Pre-registering for ESS through the Evacuee Registration and Assistance (ERA) tool, will make the process faster if you need these services.
