Fire Protection

In the Peace River Regional District, a combination of professional and volunteer fire departments provide comprehensive fire protection services, including firefighting and rescue operations, fire prevention and education, fire safety inspections and community outreach. We partner with wildfire experts to deliver the FireSmartTM program to our rural residents. This program teaches you how to prepare your property for wildfires by making simple changes. Stay informed, stay prepared and help protect your community.

Maps and Fire Safety Resources

Staying informed about fire safety is crucial. The following maps and resources can give you vital information to help you stay safe. You can check the Fire Danger Rating before burning, view the status of active wildfires, find out if your property is in a fire protection area and stay updated on any fire bans or restrictions set by the BC Wildfire Service. By using these resources, you can make informed decisions and help prevent wildfires in your community.

Before You Burn

The PRRD does not have a burning bylaw and does not issue burning permits. Instead, you must contact the Wildfire Management Branch through the Burn Registration Line to obtain a burn reference number. First make sure to verify if there are any fire prohibitions in your area at bcwildfire.ca

Compliance with the Provincial Wildfire Management Plan is mandatory on public or Crown land, provincial parks and private land across BC.

Get a Burn Reference Number

If open burning is allowed and the burn exceeds a standard backyard pile (3m wide and 2m high) or has stubble or grass over 0.2 hectares, you must call the burn registration line at 888-797-1717 for a burn reference number.

Check the Venting Index

Ensure environmental conditions allow for burning by making sure to check the venting index.

Contact Local Fire Departments

If you are in the Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, Taylor, Chetwynd, Fort St. John, Charlie Lake, Tomslake, Tumbler Ridge, Moberly Lake or Arras rural fire protection areas, notify the respective fire department before burning.

Please follow BC Wildfire Service prevention guidelines and take local fire department advice for safe burning practices.
